I enjoyed the previous
self titled Wai Pi Wai album, and figured the follow-up mini album
"Beat Planet" couldn't be a disappointment. The release
isn't a disappointment, as it's full of light hearted electro experimentation
which kind of reminds me of some of Oil 10's music. There is more
focus on the beat though in this mini album (go figure, considering the
CD's title hints at that) then a typical Oil 10 release might focus
on.
One complaint I have is the album doesn't immediately grab my attention
with anything memorable in the song Night Ride.
It's not a bad song, as it's got energy and a steady thumping beat. While
listening to it though, I found that it was easy to forget and went to the
background of my thoughts. You Can Touch It starts
off slow, but as it continues it begins showing more promise of music that's
engaging to listen to. It wasn't until Out of Space
though that I found a track which piqued my mind's interest actively. There
is an old-school sort of feel in it's approach to electro music, which makes
it a fun track to get into.
The remainder of the album is fun to listen to between Velvet
Morning's lively beat, and the varying beats and effects used
through the Wait Pi Wai remix.
The remix is my favorite track of the whole release, but sadly it signals
the end of the CD that I felt was just picking up in momentum. So with it's
end I typically pull out the disc, feeling content I got a little under
1/2 an hour of enjoyable electro and beats; but wanting more to appease
my soul. Maybe that's the whole point of this little teaser EP though. It's
hopefully meant to fill the hole between Wai Pi Wai's great first
album, and any future work that the members of Ah Cama-Sotz and Mimetic
wish to collaborate on creating.
