Here is the first single from Icon of Coil, to herald the
coming of the complete album "The Soul is in the Software." While the debut album from IOC contained some interesting beats and lyrics at points, the album did not strike me as all that special. I bought this single not expecting anything totally new and different, but hopefully something of enjoyment. While the single doesn't break any "new" grounds musically, it is infectious if you are the type that can appreciate well produced dance music.
If you are the type that keeps up on the latest trance music, then you are going to more then likely see the resemblance "Access and Amplify" shares with trance. That though is only in the sound of the beats, synths and layout of these two items. Icon of Coil's major difference from mass produced trance music lies in the vocals. They are throughout all versions presented on this single. To me the delivery of the lyrics compliments the music perfectly, not sounding out of place or distorted at any point. The choruses are all very catchy, making it difficult not to at least lip sync the vocals. Some might say the lyrics are simple, where as I'd say that's what makes them appealing. They are presented in a mature manner, and are something that can appeal to the emotions of the listener.
Of particular note: Track 4: "Access and Amplify (hudlager remix)"
This track stands out with the break it makes from the immediate trance comparisons on the other tracks presented. Following a drum
roll intro comes a *deep* bass beat, which pulsates from the speakers
with various small effects progressively added in the background. After
several seconds of this, the catchy tune recognizeable from the original version fades into the bass beat. The lyrics are next to come, with the verses more spread out between the music; but retaining the same pace in their delivery. The chorus is where the delivery of the vocals is changed, adding in a slightly echoing, robotic effect. The only downfall is that as I start getting into the new sound of the chorus, the song's beat begins to slow and ends shortly there after! Thank goodness for repeat in situations like this :)
I will be one of the people picking up the full length release as soon as I can, even though I am not expecting much new. Sometimes a well produced track, with lyrics that are catchy and a steady dance beat just do the trick. From what "Access and Amplify" presents, I'd say Icon of Coil have mastered that aspect of music.
